This list of links provides a good starting point to look at a variety of contemporary ceramic work. Please select three ceramic artists (from the links above) whose work you particularly admire and list them in the comment section below. As part of the process, please include artist web pages or links to images of their work. (If possible, try not to select an artist who has already been chosen).

This assignment is worth 30 points. (5 points for each artist and 5 points for web images/links for each artist.)

Looking at Sam's links provided a very cool web experience. First of all, The John O'Brien and Diana Wittliff links led me nowhere, so I focused on the Tamba Tokkuri link. When I got to the page, there was a nice 19th century vase referred to as "mingei". Mingei literally means "art of (for)the people", and is also considered as "folk art". I googled "mingei" and found some amazing images and web sites devoted to mingei pottery. This is the kind of learning experience that I want students to have.

Although it is ultimately Sam's choice, when he sets up his "Artist of the Week" page, he can display mingei images and provide a brief description of the process. At the very least, Sam can use mingei as a philosophical and technical starting point for the work he does in the studio. I think that many others in the class can relate to this "idea" as well and it has certainly influenced my own work.
